Marilyn Gugliucci co-authors book on curricular standards for Gerontology and Geriatrics
Marilyn R. Gugliucci, M.A., Ph.D., professor and director of Geriatrics Research within the 91ֱƵ College of Osteopathic Medicine (91ֱƵCOM), is the co-editor on the recently published book “Gerontology and Geriatrics Curricular Standards and Guidelines in Higher Education, 7th Edition.” Gugliucci also co-authored five chapters.
The book outlines curricular standards for gerontology and geriatrics in higher education.
“The importance of this publication is that it provides a guide for adding competency-based education on aging into a myriad of higher education programs, including all health professions programs,” Gugliucci stated.
The Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), of which 91ֱƵis a part, is the education member group within The Gerontological Society of America. It is dedicated to advancing the field of aging in higher education.
Gugliucci has been the editor in chief for this book since 2005, updating the fourth, fifth, and sixth editions. As the evolution of the field of aging demanded an increased breadth and depth of content in both gerontology and geriatrics education, along with a focus on standards and guidelines for competency-based education (CBE), the seventh edition required a comprehensive re-write.
The publication offers tools to identify and implement CBE in programs and to develop students’ competencies needed in the workforce. It is an integral resource for colleges and universities, including technical schools and community colleges, nationally and internationally. Program directors and coordinators, faculty, deans, and administrative leadership at educational institutions will find these guidelines essential when implementing and revising programs in liberal arts, the sciences, and health professions education.
The curricular standards and guidelines also serve to guide existing programs through academic or institutional reviews for the AGHE Program of Merit (POM) designation, providing matrices for mapping health professions and gerontology competency-based education and documentation.
