Registered Nurse at Mid Coast Hospital

The Alumni Advancement office recently interviewed Kevin Sinisi about his 91Ö±²¥ÊÓƵexperience and career plans.

Describe your career path and key professional choices to this point.

KS: I originally graduated with a degree in health sciences and worked as a rehab tech at a Skilled Nursing Facility in New York City. Since graduating from the ABSN program at 91Ö±²¥ÊÓƵI have been working as an RN in the Intensive Care Unit at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

What do you like most about your career? What do you find most rewarding?

KS: I believe that being the bridge between patient and family in these trying times has been the most rewarding experience. COVID restrictions in the hospital has made it all the more difficult for families to be with loved ones. Family support is crucial while in the hospital as it provides support and comfort. Seeing positive patient outcomes from family interaction reminds me of why I chose this profession.

How did your time at 91Ö±²¥ÊÓƵimpact you as a student, a person and a professional?

KS: Time management was the biggest take away for me upon completion of the ABSN program. I had always struggled with organization and worried about this moving into a career that has a lot to deal with time management of organization. I am now proud to say it is one of strong suits and helps me every day going into work.

How did receiving a scholarship while a student at 91Ö±²¥ÊÓƵimpact your education or experience?

KS: Receiving the Helene Fuld Trust Award had a major impact on my rapid journey through the ABSN program. Holding a prior degree coming into nursing school, I was already in a considerable amount of debt, adding stress to an already demanding degree program. Along with being a prestigious and honorable recognition, the scholarship relieved much of the financial stress burdening me at the time. I am very grateful to have earned this scholarship during my time at UNE.

What advice would you give to current students who may be job searching or graduating soon?

KS: When looking for jobs I would recommend being proactive with each employer and do not be afraid to apply to your dream position out of school. Many people may tell you that you need more experience, but showing initiative is the best step towards landing that dream job. Above all move at your own pace, some people want to start applying while still in school and some people start upon graduation or post licensing exam; both are just fine.

What are you most proud of in your career or personal life?

KS: I am most proud to be working in an ICU as a new grad: I have the preparation from 91Ö±²¥ÊÓƵto thank for that. Critical care was my main area of interest upon graduation from the ABSN program and am grateful and proud to be where I am this early on in my career.

What is your favorite 91Ö±²¥ÊÓƵmemory?

KS: My favorite 91Ö±²¥ÊÓƵmemory would be our pinning ceremony, carefully carried out even in the middle of a pandemic. Being able to stand on stage with all of my peers that worked tirelessly for 18 months to achieve our degrees was an unforgettable experience. I am very appreciative of the hard work 91Ö±²¥ÊÓƵput forth to make that happen for our small cohort.
