Lara Carlson, DPE, FACSM, CSCS, associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and the Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences, has been nominated for the 2018 National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Educator of the Year Award for the third consecutive year.

This award is given to an educator who has made noteworthy contributions to teaching and clinical application in the fields of strength training and conditioning and exercise and sport science.  Nominations are made by former students who are now certified professionals or other professionals familiar with a nominee鈥檚 work and mentorship of students.

Among the factors considered in granting the award include educational background, publications in the field, presentations at NSCA conferences, course development, teaching, mentorship and coaching.

Carlson, a strength and conditioning specialist certified through the NSCA, serves as an associate editor for the organization鈥檚 Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. She is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a two-term member of that organization鈥檚 New England chapter. Carlson also holds a faculty appointment with the Department of Veterans Affairs and, in that capacity, has assisted combat veterans with their musculoskeletal conditions. She has authored numerous published articles and has widely presented her work both nationally and internationally.

A former strength coach for the Castleton University men鈥檚 hockey team, Carlson, at UNE, has mentored several students, several of whom have published as first authors, in their research in the field of exercise science.

The winner of the award will be announced in July at the 2018 NSCA National Conference.
