UNE鈥檚 David Livingstone Smith gives talk on dehumanization
On January 20, David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, gave a talk called 鈥淢aking Monsters: from race to dehumanization and beyond鈥 at Pomona College.
The talk, sponsored by the Philosophy Department, focused on Livingstone鈥檚 new work on dehumanization. His studies will be presented in detail in his new book, Making Monsters: The Uncanny Power of Dehumanization, to be published by Harvard University Press next year.
The author of Less than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave, and Exterminate Others (2011), Smith has drawn upon on history, psychology, biology, anthropology, and philosophy to describe what dehumanization is, reveal the psychological processes underpinning it, and explain its role in human life.
