UNE’s Anne-Marie Davee recommends a “fruitful” diet in 'Journal Tribune' article

An article by Anne-Marie Davee, M.S., RDN, LD, a 91ֱƵNutrition program faculty member and Maine SNAP-Ed senior nutrition program coordinator, appeared in the February issue of Health & Wellness, a publication of the Journal Tribune.

In keeping with the issue’s theme of nutrition and healthy eating, Davee’s article, “Make Your Diet a Fruitful One,” extols the nutritional benefits of fruit. According to Davee, the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend a focus on whole fruit, whether fresh, frozen, canned or dried.

In the article she discusses the benefits of different sorts of fruit, explaining that, depending on the type, they contain high levels of vitamin C and/or vitamin A – two important nutrients in maintaining optimal health. Fruits, she says, are also high in potassium and soluble fiber, while being low in fat and sodium and relatively low in calories.

Davee also notes that fruit is a great food for satisfying a “sweet tooth.” She explains: “On the sweeter side, fruits are naturally high in two simple sugars; glucose and fructose.  These natural sugars can help satisfy that end of a meal craving for a sweet dessert, without a calorie overload.”

She suggests that when shopping for fruits, one should “think about the colors of the rainbow” and “choose lots of different colors… to ensure intake of a variety of nutrients.
