David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, gave a talk at a panel discussion on 鈥淐ombating Dehumanization鈥 at the Inamori Center for Ethics and Excellence at Case Western Reserve University on October 27.

In his talk, titled 鈥淢aking monsters: the uncanny power of dehumanization,鈥 Smith used examples of what are known as 鈥渟pectacle lynchings鈥 鈥 lynchings that drew crowds of thousands of people and at which the victim was tortured before being killed 鈥 to illustrate his theory of dehumanization.

An article about Smith's talk at Case Western was published on the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards website.
