After facing off against 20 undergraduate teams from the northeast, Mathematical Science majors Brea Rivard (’19) and Jessica White (’19) were awarded third place in the Collegiate Mathematics Competition, hosted by the Northeastern Section of the Mathematical Association of America (NES/MAA). The event was held November 18, 2016 at Trinity College.

Rivard and White solved problems from several areas of mathematics, including calculus, differential equations, real and complex analysis, probability and statistics, geometry, number theory, combinatorics, abstract algebra and linear algebra. They also took part in a math scavenger hunt.

The competition was part of the 60th annual NES/MAA Fall meeting, attended by teachers, faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, mathematicians, computer scientists, and others in government, business and industry. James Quinlan, Ph.D., assistant professor and Susan Bell, M.A., assistant lecturer, both of UNE’s Department of Mathematical Sciences represented UNE.
