UNE’s Portland Campus Art Gallery Features “Portraits of the Artist” Exhibition
The Art Gallery on the 91ֱƵ’s Portland Campus is currently showing an exhibition titled “Portraits of the Artist.” Curated by Stephen Halpert, the exhibition will run through February 7, 2016.
This exhibition includes formal portraits (such as James Joyce by Berenice Abbott) and advertising posters (such as Todd Webb’s photo of an Edith Piaf poster on a wall in Paris) in addition to other portraits of artists of all kinds -- actors, musicians, writers, poets, playwrights, composers, visual artists, filmmakers. The images are classic and contemporary, local, national and global in stature.
There are 110 subjects including a number from the 91ֱƵ’s Permanent Collection – Robert Frost, Berenice Abbott, Lotte Jacobi, May Sarton and Edna St. Vincent Millay among them. This exhibition is part of a year-long state-wide collaboration, the Maine Photo Project, supported in part by the Maine Arts Commission and the Maine Office of Tourism.
